I am thankful for every opportunity to share an update on the work of the Association of Baptist Students (ABS) ministering on the campus of Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. As I type this update, we are preparing for our third orientation week of the summer, and the students have just completed the first session of the Summer Quarter.
Last weekend, we held our officers meeting and made plans for the Fall Quarter. Welcome Week begins on Labor Day (Sept. 2), but students will be moving in before that week. August 28 is the first day students will be allowed to move onto campus. Since Food Services will not be available that week, we want to help out the incoming students by providing lunches on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. If your church would like to sponsor or help supply lunch for those days, please email me at our new ABS email abs.latech1970@gmail.com.
Welcome Week will also come with its own special events aimed at reaching out to new and returning students. We will also have meals each day of that week, beginning Tuesday. If your church, Sunday School class or small group would be willing to help us with these special events and meals, it would be a great help to our efforts at making contacts for the ABS.
There is no doubt that the Fall Quarter will be a busy season packed with ABS events, Tech football and new students adjusting to college life. We want to use this time to establish relationships with students that will hopefully last a lifetime, not just their four (or more!) years of college life.
Thank you to those who have been giving faithfully to the ministry of ABS. Without your support, we could not and would not exist. My family and I moved into our house in Ruston on July 15, so we are able to get even more settled in for the work God has called us to do.
Many of you know of our intention to plant a local BMA church in Ruston. We greatly desire your prayers as those efforts begin. First Baptist Church in Magnolia is our sending church, and we have also been approved as North American church planters by the BMAA Missionary Advisory Committee. These two works are incredibly important for the campus of Louisiana Tech and the town of Ruston.
In our flesh, we know we are incapable of achieving these lofty goals, but by the Spirit, the Word and the prayers of the saints and the churches, we firmly believe we can do great things for the glory of God! As William Carey, said while preaching Isaiah 54, “Expect great things from God, and attempt great things for God!” Grace and peace to you.
