CBC SPORTS: Cabrel Reels Off 4 Straight Wins

Men’s Soccer

         • St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 6 — The American Midwest Conference (AMC) released their all-conference teams, and a CBC player was among the selections. Hugo Chacon earned a second-team selection from the coaches in the AMC. Chacon played in 14 games this season and played outstanding defense. He was part of two shutouts and took two shots on the season.

         • St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 6 — Entering AMC tournament play as the #7 seed, CBC took on the #2 seed Missouri Baptist (MBU) Spartans in the AMC quarterfinals at Spartan Field. CBC (5-14) conceded a goal early, tied the match, trailed at halftime and conceded two more in the second half to fall to MBU (11-5-3) 4-1, ending their season. Brayden Hall scored his first career goal in the 14th minute off an assist from Manny Almaraz after MBU grabbed the lead in the fifth minute. MBU would add goals in the 15th, 70th and 80th minutes to close down the season for the Mustangs.

Men’s Basketball

         • Siloam Springs, Nov. 8 — Playing on the first day of the John Brown University Classic, #14 CBC took on the Falcons of Florida College (FC) in a matchup of two NAIA National Tournament teams from last season. #14 CBC (4-0) fought off several charges from FC (2-4), leading by 11 at the half before winning 83-75. Gabe Johnson and Jonas Carlisle were the leading scorers with 16 each, while Devin Foster chipped in with 15 off the bench, and Sage Borbon had 10. The Mustangs won the game with three-pointers, draining 12, free throws, besting FC 9 to 4 and on turnovers, where CBC scored 21 points off 18 FC turnovers.

         • Siloam Springs, Nov. 9 — Playing on the final day of the John Brown University Classic, #14 CBC took on Webber International (WIU) in the first meeting between the two schools and a meeting of two NAIA National Tournament teams. #14 CBC (5-0) held off a late charge from WIU (1-4) to win 75-66. Sage Borbon was the leading scorer with 13 points, while Gabe Johnson chipped in with 11, and Wade Williams added 10. Williams and Hykeem Hancock were the leading rebounders with eight each and Johnson had seven assists to lead the Mustangs. CBC shot 43% from the field, made eight threes and went 9-11 at the stripe while forcing 14 turnovers, translating into 13 points.

Women’s Cross Country

         • Hannibal, Mo., Nov. 8 — Competing for the final time this season, the CBC was on the course for the AMC championship on the campus of Hannibal-LaGrange University. CBC placed eighth in the competition. Individually, Mackenzie Milligan was the top finisher, posting the fastest time ever by a Mustang in a 6K, recording a time of 31:18.75 followed by Bay Davis at 33:41.92, Alana Bressler at 39:47.88, Lindsey Risner at 43:01.98, Ryleigh Keele at 1:00:33.31 and Kinley Johnson at 1:00:33.52.

Men’s Cross Country

         • Hannibal, Mo., Nov. 8 — Competing for the final time this season, the CBC was on the course for the AMC championship on the campus of Hannibal-LaGrange University. CBC would place seventh in the competition. Individually, Chris Palmer was the top finisher, posting his third sub-30-minute 8K of the year, finishing in a time of 28:41.07, his second-best time this season and the best time a Mustang has ever recorded at the AMC Championship. Josh Brown was next, finishing in a time of 44:01.11 followed by Calan Cowdery at 46:29.42, Evan East at 46:42.97, Luke Raney at 50:35.53 and Solomon Barnes at 50:51.51.

Volleyball

         • Conway, Nov. 8 — Opening the final weekend of the regular season at home, CBC hosted the Cougars of Columbia College (CC) in an AMC tilt inside A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (7-12, 5-5 AMC) was swept by CC (20-11, 9-1 AMC), falling by scores of 12-25, 16-25 and 20-25. Madeline Freeman led the way with 10 kills, Brooke Schmitz had 10 assists and Kailee Walker had 12 digs. CBC had 23 kills and hit .031, while Columbia had 44 kills and hit .280.

         • Conway, Nov. 9 — Playing their final match at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse this season, CBC hosted the Stars of Stephens College (SC) in an AMC battle. CBC (7-13, 5-6 AMC) couldn’t find enough offense to beat SC (14-15, 9-2 AMC), falling in straight sets by scores of 15-25, 14-25 and 13-25. Aubree Ruggles and Lakyn Johnson were the kills leaders with five apiece, while Brooke Schmitz led with 12 assists, and Madeline Freeman led with eight digs. After the match, Schmitz, Sheridan Rogers, Kailee Walker and Faith Stone were recognized for their contributions to the program on Senior Day.

Women’s Soccer

         • Columbia, Mo., Nov. 8 — Opening the AMC quarterfinals as the #8 seed, CBC took on the regular season champion Columbia Cougars at Marvin Owens Field. CBC (0-11-1) saw their season end at the hands of CC (15-1-1), falling 9-0. Rebecca Vandenburg had 16 saves in the match, her most this season. Josslyn Reynolds was able to get a shot off, but it went wide.

Wrestling

         • Poteau, Okla., Nov. 9 — CBC was on the mat at the Viking Open, hosted by Carl Albert State. Isaiah Hendrix and Mason Nguyen wrestled at 149 pounds, while Tyler Cabral wrestled in the 157-pound class. Hendrix went 1-2 on the day with an overtime win in his first match, followed by a pair of defeats. Nguyen went 0-2 in his matches, while Cabral went 5-1 and captured third place at 157. He defeated his first opponent by a 15-0 technical fall before losing his second match. He then reeled off four straight in the consolation bracket, winning the first two by technical fall scores of 19-4 and 22-5 (a record for points in a tech fall) before scoring a win by a 10-4 decision in the semifinal and a win by injury default in the third place match.
