CBC SPORTS: CBC Women's Soccer Gets Victory
Women’s Golf
• Batesville, Sept. 26 — Entering the final round two shots off the lead, CBC played the final round of the Scots Fall Invitational at Eagle Mountain Golf Course. CBC closed with a final round 341 and held their position in second, 14 shots behind the winners from Mississippi University for Women. Individually, Alyssa Hagewood finished in a tie for third with her second consecutive round of 80 to finish with a 160, 10 shots off the win. Laney Crutchfield improved the most in the second round, also firing an 80 to finish with a 170. Abby Kirby shot a final round 90 to finish at 175 and Thaylia Ramirez shot a 91 for a two-round score of 180.
Men’s Golf
• Batesville, Sept. 26 — Entering the final round just five shots off the lead in fifth place, CBC began pursuit of their second straight tournament win in the final round of the Scots Fall Invitational at Eagle Mountain Golf Club. CBC shot a final round 290, but it wasn’t enough as they finished in third place, still five shots behind the winners from Mississippi University for Women. Individually, Jakub Slapal closed with a 70 to finish at 144 in a tie for third, capturing the third-place medal in a playoff. Kitsakon Jairak finished tied for fifth after closing with a 71 as well to finish at 145 while Leopold Maes finished in a tie for eighth after shooting his second straight 73 to finish at 146.
Women’s Soccer
• Conway, Sept. 26 — Stepping out of American Midwest Conference (AMC) play, CBC headed across town to Warrior Field for a matchup with the Hendrix Warriors. CBC (2-6-2) took the lead and held it through halftime but allowed four goals in the second half to fall 4-1 to HC (8-2). Vitoria Loiola notched her fifth goal of the season in the 10th minute, and the Mustangs were able to hold the lead through halftime. The second half was all Hendrix, however, as the Warriors scored twice in the 51st minute, once in the 69th minute and again in the 80th to cap off the Mustang defeat.
• Columbia, Mo., Sept. 30 — Playing an AMC road contest for the second straight Saturday, CBC took on the Stars of Stephens College at Battle High School. CBC (3-6-2, 1-0-1 AMC) led 2-0 at halftime and recovered from a 2-2 tie to grab a 3-2 win over SC (2-7-1, 0-2-1 AMC). Vitoria Loiola, Annesta Richards and Amanda Parreiras all scored for the Mustangs, with Parreiras scoring the winner late. Bailey Walerczyk made nine saves in goal to earn win #2.
• McKenzie, Tenn., Oct. 2 — Stepping out of AMC play for the final time in 2023, CBC took on the Wildcats of Bethel University (BU) at Wildcat Field. CBC (3-7-2) could not break through the BU (6-2) defense, falling 3-0. Bailey Walerczyk was a bright spot for CBC, making 13 saves in goal.
Women’s Basketball
• Conway, Sept. 29 — CBC women’s basketball coach Lyle Middleton has announced his 2023-24 recruiting class. The class includes one true freshman and three transfers. The four players in the class are: Aliya Grotjohn, a transfer from Cottey who joined the team last spring, but did not play after transferring; Marina Crespi, a transfer from Mallorca, Spain, who played last year at the University of Maine-Presque Isle, an NCAA Division III school in Presque Isle, Maine; Taryanna McNary, a transfer from Coastal Bend College in Texas, where she played in 28 games and averaged 6.3 points and a team-best 8.1 rebounds a game; and Mallory Malone, an in-town product from Conway Christian, who played on an Eagles squad last year that went to the 2A state championship game.
Volleyball
• Conway, Sept. 30 — Playing an AMC opponent at home for the first time this year, CBC hosted the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (7-8, 1-2 AMC) swept HLGU (3-14, 1-1 AMC) in straight sets, including a wicked comeback in the final set to complete the sweep. Katey Pate led the way in kills with 11, while Madeline Freeman joined her in double figures with 10. Brooke Schmitz was the assist leader with 20, while Freeman added 13 and Mikayla Lawrence led the way in digs with 13. Freeman completed her fifth career triple-double with 10 digs.
Men’s Soccer
• McKenzie, Tenn., Oct. 2 — Playing their final non-AMC opponent of the season, CBC took on the #13 Bethel Wildcats at Wildcat Field. CBC (4-7-1) had both of their chances on goal saved as they fell to #13 BU (9-1) 2-0. Jasper Gadellaa saved 10 of the 12 shots he faced for the Mustangs.
• Conway, Sept. 28 — Playing inside the friendly confines of Centennial Soccer Park for just the third time this season, CBC hosted the Royals of Ecclesia College on a scorching day on the field. CBC (4-6-1) led 1-0 at halftime and added a pair of second half goals to beat EC (3-5) 3-0. Marcos Pires scored the first goal of the contest and Joe McElhinney had a brace in the second half. Connor Sims earned the win in net, making two saves in the shutout.
