CBC SPORTS: Echaniz Named AMC Athlete of the Week
Women’s Golf
• Batesville, Sept. 24 — Entering the day four strokes off the individual lead at the Scots Fall Invitational, Abby Kirby, looking for her first career win in the final round at the Course at Eagle Mountain, closed with an 83 to shoot a total of 162, good for a tie for second, nine strokes off the lead. Laney Crutchfield improved her score on the second day, closing with an 85 to shoot a 172, which was good for sixth place. Thaylia Ramirez had the biggest jump, shooting a 91 to finish with a 196 and move up four spots in the final standings.
Men’s Golf
• Batesville, Sept. 24 — Entering the final round two shots off the lead, CBC looked to jump one spot and take their second win of the fall season at the Scots Fall Invitational on the Course at Eagle Mountain. CBC closed with a 302 to finish with a 599, six strokes off the win in fourth place. Jakub Slapal equaled his first-round score, shooting an even-par 72 to finish in fourth place, one shot behind the three individual leaders. Kitsakon Jairak and Suraprat Pareepart shot 76s to shoot 151 for the tournament, Preston Nestorenko shot a 78 to finish at 153 and Gustavo Bello shot an 87 for a final score of 168.
• Henderson, Tenn., Sept. 30 — Playing in their penultimate fall tournament, CBC teed off in the first round of the Freed-Hardeman Fall Invitational at the Chickasaw Golf Club. CBC shot an opening round 293 and holds a three-shot lead after one round. Individually, Jakub Slapal is in second place after firing a three-under-par round of 69, two shots off the lead. Cooper Hermann and Kitsakon Jairak are both tied for sixth after shooting first-round 74s, while Suraprat Pareepart shot a 76 and Preston Nestorenko shot a 79. Jack Higginbotham and Gustavo Bello competed as individuals, with Higginbotham posting an 80 and Bello shooting an 84.
Men’s Soccer
• North Little Rock, Sept. 24 — Playing at home for the first time in over two weeks, CBC hosted the Tigers of Champion Christian College (CCC) at the Burns Park Soccer Complex. The first-ever meeting between the two programs went the way of the Mustangs (3-5), who put three in the net in the first half and followed up with two in the second half to blow out CCC (1-5) 5-0. Hayes Lawrence had a goal and two assists in the contest, while Billy Murray also chipped in with a goal and an assist. CBC also got a penalty kick goal from Joe McElhinney, a goal from Alexander Bertilsson, and a debut goal from Brycen Clause. Edvin Yttergren and the Mustang defense had a clean sheet in Yttergren’s first start in net.
• Creve Coeur, Mo., Sept. 28 — Looking to open American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on a high note, CBC was at the Creve Coeur Soccer Park for their AMC opener against the UHSP. CBC (4-5, 1-0 AMC) got a goal in each half, beating UHSP (0-8, 0-1 AMC) 2-1. Tim Echaniz had a pair of goals for the Mustangs, the first of which was assisted by Hugh McAuley. Edvin Yttergren made his second straight start in goal and got his second win, making a pair of saves. CBC outshot UHSP 19-7 overall and 8-3 on goal
• St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 30 — CBC Men’s Soccer has an AMC athlete of the week for the first time this season. Tim Echaniz earned an Offensive Player of the Week selection. Echaniz scored a pair of goals on Saturday against the UHSP. His first goal came in the fourth minute, and his second goal came on a beautiful free kick in the 64th minute to secure the 2-1 win over the Eutectics. This is the first athlete of the week selection of his career.
Volleyball
• St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 27 — Playing an AMC opponent for the first time this season, CBC was on the court at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics (UHSP) Gymnasium for a matchup with UHSP. CBC (1-5, 1-0 AMC) won sets one, three and five to take the match 3-2 over UHSP (3-16, 0-1 AMC) by scores of 25-15, 21-25, 25-12, 23-25, and 18-16. Madeline Freeman led the way in kills with 16, and she was joined in double figures by Lakyn Johnson, who had 15, and Faith Stone, who had 13 and an attack percentage of .600. Freeman also had 21 assists, while Brooke Schmitz led the way with a career-high 33 while Freeman finished off her second triple-double of the season with 20 digs, joined in double figures by Kailee Walker, who led the way with a season-high 22. Sheridan Rogers had a season-high 21, Schmitz earned another double-double with 10 digs and Kate Scroggins had 12. The Mustangs had 62 kills and hit .170 while recording a season-high 12 service aces.
• St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 28 — Coming off their first win of both the season and AMC play, CBC was on the court at the Emerson Performance Center for another AMC clash with the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU). CBC (2-5, 2-0 AMC) swept HSSU (4-13, 0-2 AMC), winning by scores of 26-24, 25-20, and 25-23. Madeline Freeman led the way in kills with 13 while adding 12 assists and 16 digs for her second consecutive triple-double and third of the season. Brooke Schmitz led the way in assists with 14, while Kailee Walker led with 17 digs, Schmitz chipped in with 12 of her own, and Kiana Chapa added 11. The Mustangs had 42 kills and hit .174, while HSSU had 38 kills and hit .139. The key to the match was service. CBC had four aces and four errors in 74 attempts, while HSSU had only three aces and six errors.
Women’s Soccer
• Creve Coeur, Mo., Sept. 28 — Playing their AMC opener, CBC took on the Eutectics of UHSP at the Creve Coeur Soccer Park. CBC (0-4-1, 0-1 AMC) allowed three first-half and two second-half goals to fall 5-0 to UHSP (3-3, 1-0 AMC). Rebecca Vandenburg made eight saves in net, her season high. Jaycee Suarez attempted a shot, but the match was called in the 77th minute due to injuries.
Cross Country
• Fayetteville, Sept. 28 — Running for the first time in 15 days, CBC was on the course at Agri Park for the 2024 Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas. CBC had Chris Palmer compete in the Men’s Prairie Fire event, while Lindsey Risner and Bay Davis competed in the Women’s Prairie Fire event. Palmer would make history in the men’s 8K, becoming the first Mustang ever to break 30 minutes, crossing the finish line in a time of 29:20.2, beating the previous school record, set by Keegan Conway at the 2019 Lois Davis Invitational, by 41 seconds. Risner and Davis competed in the 5K distance for the women, with Risner recording a time of 28:19 and Davis recording a 29:45.4.
• St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 30 — For the second time this season, CBC cross-country athlete Chris Palmer has earned AMC runner of the week. The conference’s Sports Information Directors made the selection. Palmer made history at this past Saturday’s Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival. In the men’s Prairie Fire 8K, Palmer became the first Mustang ever to eclipse the 30-minute mark at the distance, finishing in a time of 29:20.2. He was the 10th highest finishing NAIA runner in a field of over 150.
