CBC SPORTS: Jairak Wins Second Straight Tourney

Women’s Golf

         • Kennett, Mo., Sept. 10 — Entering the final round four shots off the lead in a tie for second, Abby Kirby led CBC into the final round of the Williams Baptist Invitational, looking for her first career win. Laney Crutchfield and Thaylia Ramirez joined Kirby in the 23-team field. Kirby closed with a 76 for a two-round score of 154 to finish in a tie for fourth place and earn a medal in her second tournament of the fall. Crutchfield closed with an 85 for a total of 172, and Ramirez was the largest mover, shooting an 87 to climb two spots in the final standings.

Men’s Golf

         • Kennett, Mo., Sept. 10 — Carrying a 10-shot lead into the final round, CBC looked to close out their first win of the 2024-25 campaign in the final round at the Williams Baptist University Invitational. CBC shot a final round 296 for a total of 579, winning by 12 shots over Lyon College. Individually, Kitsakon Jairak won his second straight tournament, firing a final round 70 for a total of 138 to win the tournament by three shots. Suraprat Pareepart also medaled, tying for third after shooting a final round 75 to finish at 143. Cooper Hermann would also finish inside the top 10, tying for eighth after closing with a 76 for a total of 148. Jakub Slapal shot a second consecutive 75 to finish at 150 and Preston Nestorenko closed with a 78 for a total of 159, one shot ahead of individual competitor Gustavo Bello.

Volleyball

         • Conway, Sept. 10 — Playing at home for the second consecutive match, CBC hosted the Scots of Lyon College (LC) in front of a raucous crowd at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (0-3) won the first set 25-22 before dropping the final three sets 14-25, 13-25 and 16-25 to LC (5-1). Caroline Reams had a career night, leading the way with 11 kills on a .364 attack percentage. Brooke Schmitz tied her career high with 22 assists, and Kate Scroggins paced the defense with 14 digs. CBC had 38 kills and hit .110, while Lyon had 61 kills and hit .307.

         • Little Rock, Sept. 12 — Playing on the road for the second time this season, CBC was at Mims Gymnasium for a rivalry tilt against the Philander Smith University (PSU) Panthers. CBC (0-4) won the second and fourth sets 25-22 and 26-24, respectively, but dropped sets one, three and five to fall 3-2 to PSU (6-2). Aubree Ruggles led the way in kills with 11 while hitting .286 on the night. Brooke Schmitz led with a season-high 23 assists, and Lakyn Johnson had a team-high 14 digs. Schmitz was also in double figures in digs with 12 for her second double-double of the season, while Madeline Freeman chipped in with 11 assists and 12 digs of her own for her first double-double. CBC had 46 kills and hit .110 but made eight service errors and allowed 15 aces to the Panthers, who had 54 kills and hit .154.

Men’s Soccer

         • Jackson, Miss., Sept. 13 — CBC took on the Bulldogs of Tougaloo College (TC) at the Mississippi School for the Deaf. CBC (2-3) scored two goals in the first half and two in the second half to beat TC (1-2) 4-0. Joe McElhinney, Billy Murray, Hayes Lawrence and Tim Echaniz all scored for the Mustangs. McElhinney’s goal came in the 16th minute and gave CBC the lead, while Murray scored in the 43rd minute to put CBC up 2-0 at the break. Lawrence’s goal came in the 59th minute to further extend the lead, and Echaniz’s goal came in the 86th minute to put the icing on the cake. Jasper Gadellaa was only challenged twice, making both stops.

Women’s Soccer

         • Batesville, Sept. 14 — Playing for the first time in a week, CBC was at Huser Field for a clash with the Lyon College Scots. CBC (0-3-1) fought hard and got a couple of opportunities to score but ultimately finished tied 0-0 with Lyon (1-3-1). Rebecca Vandenburg made her second start in goal and had two saves. Kitanna Richards and Julissa Arevalo made attempts toward goal, but both were saved.
