CBC SPORTS: Men's Basketball Wins Conference Opener

Men’s Basketball

         • Conway, Nov. 23 — Coming off a hard-fought win on Thursday night in their American Midwest Conference (AMC) opener, #11 CBC hosted the Eutectics of the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis (UHSP) at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. #11 CBC (7-1, 2-0 AMC) trailed by five early but rallied in the second half, winning 89-73 over UHSP (5-2, 0-2 AMC). Hykeem Hancock led the way with 25 points off the bench, while Jonas Carlisle also had double figures with 14, and Wade Williams chipped in with 13. CBC shot 51% from the floor in the game and held UHSP to 44% from the floor and 21% from three.

         • Conway, Nov. 26 — Stepping out of AMC play, #11 CBC hosted the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian University (BMCU) at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. #11 CBC (8-1) led at halftime and fought off a late charge from BMCU (4-6) to win 67-63. Sage Borbon and Gabe Johnson were the co-leading scorers for the Mustangs with 13 points each, while Jonas Carlisle pitched in with 11 to go with a team-high 8 rebounds. Devin Foster had a stellar night defensively, turning the Toppers away four times. The key stats were turnovers, as CBC forced 22 and was able to turn those turnovers into 20 points while outscoring BMCU in the paint 34-28.

         • Conway, Nov. 30 — Playing their fourth game against a team that went to the NAIA National tournament last season, #10 CBC hosted the Panthers of Philander Smith University (PSU) at Reddin Fieldhouse. #10 CBC (8-2) led by eight at halftime but couldn’t shut down a potent PSU (7-3) attack and fell 91-84. Three Mustangs finished in double figures scoring, led by Jonas Carlisle with 19 points. Wade Williams had 18 and Brian Alexander contributed 14 off the bench. The Mustangs were outscored 48-33 in the second half and shot 32% from the field after halftime, compared to 53% for the Panthers.

Women’s Basketball

         • Conway, Nov. 23 — Coming off an AMC opening loss on Nov. 21, CBC hosted the Eutectics of UHSP in an AMC game at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (3-2, 1-1 AMC) led after every quarter and cruised to an 85-66 win over UHSP (1-5,1-1 AMC). Aliya Grotjohn led the way with 20 points, 16 of which she scored in the first half. Riley Whittington posted her second consecutive 19-point outing, while Raigan Head added 17, and Lydia York chipped in with 12. Head notched her third double-double of the season by leading the way with 12 rebounds, while Whittington added seven assists. CBC outshot UHSP 44% to 35% from the field and 41% to 25% from three.

         • Conway, Nov. 26 — Stepping out of AMC play for the final time this season, CBC took on the Toppers of BMCU at Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (3-3) led after one quarter but trailed by 6 at halftime before losing 60-39 to BMCU (7-3). Tamara Christmas led the way with 15 points off the bench, while Addison Hudspeth joined her in double figures with 12. Raigan Head grabbed a team-leading 11 rebounds, and Rhys Anderson handed out 5 assists. CBC was outshot 34% to 29% from the field and made just 2 of 21 threes compared to 8 for the Toppers.

Wrestling

         • Powder Springs, Ga., Nov. 23 — CBC was on the mat at the Lucha Open, hosted by Life University. Five wrestlers competed in the event for CBC. Competing in the Gold Division, Isaiah Hendrix went 0-2 at 149 pounds, while Tyler Cabral went 2-2 at 157 pounds, winning by a 15-5 major decision in his first match before picking up an 8-4 decision win in his third. Competing in the Silver Division, Mason Nguyen went 2-2 at 149 pounds, winning his first two matches, one by fall and one by a 7-2 decision; Alfredo Zapata had the best showing, going 4-2 at 165 pounds, winning his first match by medical forfeit, his second match by a fall at 4:20, then, following a loss in his third match, he won by a 9-6 decision followed by a 22-5 tech fall for his final win, and Juan Luis-Tapia went 3-1, dropping his first match before winning the next two, both by fall, but losing by fall in his final match.
