CBC SPORTS: Men's Golf Wins Final Tourney
Women’s Golf
CBC played the final round of the CBC Fall Invitational at the Country Club of Arkansas. Abby Kirby shot an 83 to finish in second place, six shots of the win, and an overall score of 164. Laney Crutchfield shot an 85 to finish in fourth place with a 175 and Thaylia Ramirez closed with a 97 to finish with a 197.
Men’s Golf
• Maumelle, Oct. 8 — Carrying a four-shot lead into the final round of the CBC Fall Invitational at Country Club of Arkansas and CBC looked to close down their final fall tournament on a high note. The Mustangs finished the job, shooting a 296 to finish at 911 and a 28-shot win over Hendrix. Kitsakon Jairak led the way by winning the individual title, closing with a 70 to shoot 218, taking the victory by two strokes. Jakub Slapal finished third with a 225, while Suraprat Pareepart took seventh with a 231. Paul Gomez and Jack Higginbotham also finished inside the top 10, with Gomez shooting a 232 to tie for eighth and Higginbotham shooting a 236 to tie for tenth. Cooper Hermann finished with a 238, Preston Nestorenko carded a 242 and Gustavo Bello finished with a 260.
Volleyball
• Conway, Oct. 8 — CBC hosted Philander Smith (PSU) inside A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse and took care of business to improve to 4-6 on the season in a four-set win that dropped the Panthers to 13-5. CBC’s win was the 18th in 26 meetings all-time, and they improved to 2-1 in four setters this season and 61-61 in four-set matches all-time. The Mustangs had 64 kills and hit .235 while landing seven service aces to just two for the Panthers as CBC avenged an earlier loss to PSU in September in Little Rock. Madeline Freeman, Lakyn Johnson and Xiangelisse Velazquez all finished with double-digit kills, while Freeman and Brooke Schmitz both had 20-plus assists and Freeman, Schmitz, Kailee Walker, Sheridan Rogers and Kate Scroggins all recorded double-figures in digs.
• Hot Springs, Oct. 10 —CBC took on the Tigers of Champion Christian College (CCC) at the Champion Community Center. CBC (5-6) swept through CCC (3-15), winning by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-21. Madeline Freeman led the way with 10 kills and 16 assists for her second double-double of the season. Brooke Schmitz also had 12 assists, while Kailee Walker led the defense with 10 digs. The Mustangs hit .225 and had 42 kills with an additional 14 service aces against the Tigers, who had 27 kills and 12 aces.
• Conway, Oct. 11 —CBC hosted the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian University (BMCU) on jersey night inside A. R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (5-7) got off to a fast start but couldn’t stop the potent BMCU (14-5) offense, falling in straight sets by scores of 21-25, 13-25 and 18-25. Xiangelisse Velazquez led the way with eight kills, while both Madeline Freeman and Brooke Schmitz finished in double figures in assists with 17 and 13, respectively. Kailee Walker was the only Mustang to eclipse double figures in digs with 16. CBC had 34 kills and hit .134 while BMCU had 45 kills and hit .264.
Men’s Soccer
• Memphis, Tenn., Oct. 8 — CBC took on the Christian Brothers University (CBU) Buccaneers in an NAIA vs. NCAA Division II showdown. The final non-conference test of the season for the Mustangs did not go as planned as CBC trailed 3-0 at the half and fell 7-1 to CBU, dropping to 4-7 on the season, while the Bucs improved to 3-3-2. Billy Murray scored CBC’s goal in the 76th minute after the Mustangs spent the final 30 minutes playing a man down. Edvin Yttergren started in goal and was relieved early in the second half by Jafar Chehade, who made his CBC debut.
• North Little Rock, Oct. 12 — Returning home after a midweek road trip, CBC hosted the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) in an American Midwest Conference (AMC) match at Burns Park. CBC (4-8, 1-1 AMC) fell behind early, netted a goal just before halftime, but couldn’t get another one as they dropped a 2-1 contest to HSSU (3-5-4, 1-2 AMC). Joe McElhinney scored his second goal of the season in the 44th minute off a free kick from Parker Tebo. His header deflected in past the keeper to cut the deficit in half after Harris-Stowe scored in the 11th minute and on a penalty kick in the 24th minute. Jafar Chehade made his first career start in goal and made four saves while playing all 90 minutes.
Cross Country
• Clarksville, Oct. 12 — Running for the final time before the AMC meet next month, CBC was on course at Clarksville High School for the University of the Ozarks Invitational. Mackenzie Milligan and Bay Davis competed in the women’s event and Chris Palmer and Josh Brown ran the men’s event. Milligan crossed the line in the 5K with a time of 26:28 flat and Davis crossed the finish line in 29:04.5. Palmer broke his own 8K record, finishing in eighth place, the top NAIA competitor, with a new program record time of 27:38.2, beating the record he previously marked by nearly two minutes. Brown finished the 8K in a time of 42:40.6.
Women’s Soccer
• North Little Rock, Oct. 12 — Playing shorthanded for the second consecutive week, CBC hosted the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State (HSSU) in an AMC match at the Burns Park Soccer Complex. CBC (0-6-1, 0-3 AMC) gave up three goals in the first half and two in the second to fall to HSSU (4-5-1, 1-2 AMC) 5-0 after the match was called after 70 minutes due to attrition. Rebecca Vandenburg made four saves for the Mustangs.
