CBC SPORTS: Spring Sports in Full Swing
Men’s Golf
• Cabot, March 18 — Coming off a win in their first tournament this spring, CBC teed off for the first two rounds of the 2024 CBC Invitational at Cypress Creek Golf Club. CBC shot a two-round score of 606, 13 shots behind the leaders, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Individually, Emmanuel LaBeur paced CBC, shooting 77-71 for a 148, and putting him in a tie for 6th, 4 shots off the lead. Jakub Slapal was next, shooting 77-74 (151), followed by Kitsakon Jairak, who shot 76-76 (152). Preston Nestorenko, who competed as an individual, went 80-75 (155) and was followed by Leopold Maes, who shot 86-73 for a 159, Suraprat Pareepart, who went 82-84 (166) and Paul Gomez, who competed as an individual, shot 92-80 for a 172.
• Cabot, March 19 — Looking to move up one spot, CBC teed off for the final round of the CBC Invitational at Cypress Creek Golf Course needing to erase a 14-shot deficit. The Mustangs shot the second-best round of the day at 298, but it wasn’t enough to take down the winners from USAO. Individually, Kitsakon Jairak closed with a 71 to finish in a tie for 7th with a three-round score of 223. Emmanuel LaBeur closed with a 77 to finish at 225, while Jakub Slapal also finished with a 77 to shoot 228. Preston Nestorenko, who competed as an individual, shot a 76 to finish with a 231, one shot ahead of Leopold Maes, who closed with a 73. Suraprat Pareepart shot 80 to finish at 246 and Paul Gomez, the other individual competitor, improved to a 76 to finish at 248.
• West Point, Miss., March 25 — Playing for the third straight week this spring, CBC teed off for the first 36 holes of the Blue Mountain Christian Spring Classic at Mossy Oak Golf Club. CBC shot 310-302 for a 612 over the first 36 holes and sits in 6th place, 23 shots behind the co-leaders. Individually, Kitsakon Jairak, Jakub Slapal and Emmanuel LaBeur all shot 152s in the first two rounds, with Jairak going 74-78 and both Slapal and LaBeur going 78-74. Preston Nestorenko shot 80-78 for a 158 and Leopold Maes shot 85-76 for a 161.
Women’s Golf
• Cabot, March 18 — Playing on a chilly day, CBC hosted the 2024 CBC Invitational first round at the Cypress Creek Golf Club. The Mustangs opened with a 371 and sit in 4th place, 50 shots behind the leaders from Bethel University. Individually, Alyssa Hagewood is tied for 5th, 4 shots off the lead after shooting an 80. Abby Kirby shot a first round 94, Laney Crutchfield shot a 95 and Thaylia Ramirez shot a 102.
• Cabot, March 19 — Looking to move out of fourth place in the final round, CBC teed off on the final round of the CBC Invitational at Cypress Creek Golf Club. CBC improved by 7 shots on day two, but couldn’t close the gap, finishing the tournament in 4th place with a score of 735. Individually, Alyssa Hagewood finished with an 86 to shoot a 166 in the tournament, good for 12th place overall. Laney Crutchfield had the best final round on the women’s team, shooting an 85 in the final round to finish with a 180. Abby Kirby closed with a 95 to shoot 189, and Thaylia Ramirez improved by four strokes to shoot a 200 for the tournament.
• West Point, Miss., March 25 — Teeing off for the first two rounds, CBC was on the course at Old Waverly Golf Club for the Blue Mountain Christian Spring Invitational. CBC shot 384-372 for an overall score of 756, good for 12th place through 36 holes. Individually, Alyssa Hagewood led the Mustangs with rounds of 83 & 85 for a 168. Abby Kirby was next, shooting a 98 and 87 for a 185 followed by Laney Crutchfield with a 98-94 for a 192 and Thaylia Ramirez who shot a 105-106 for a 211.
Softball
• Arkadelphia, March 19 — Playing an NCAA opponent for the second straight week, CBC was at Langston Field for a doubleheader against the Ouachita Baptist Tigers (OBU). CBC (10-14) fought back in game one, only to lose 8-3 and they hung with OBU (7-22) for seven-and-one-third before falling 3-2.
Men’s Basketball
• Kansas City, Mo., March 21 — Playing in the Round of 16 for the first time in program history, the #14 seed CBC took on the #2 seed and #4 team in the nation, the Eagles of Oklahoma Wesleyan (OWU). CBC (28-6) overcame a 10-point deficit with 5:04 left to play to upset OWU (31-3), winning by a score of 84-79 to advance to the NAIA National Quarterfinals. Wade Williams led the way with 20 points, including 15 in the second half. Sage Borbon had 19, including 14 in the second half, while Deshawn Corprew had another double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Kyle Harding added 16 off the bench, including 13 in the first half. CBC won despite losing the rebounding battle, but did force 17 turnovers compared to committing just 9.
• Kansas City, Mo., March 23 — Looking to continue their run at the NAIA Men’s Basketball Championship, CBC, the #14 seed in the Cramer Quadrant, took on the #1 seed and #5 team in the nation, the Lions of Freed-Hardeman (FHU), in an American Midwest Conference (AMC) rivalry renewed on the national stage. CBC (28-7) raced out early, but couldn’t stop a hot shooting FHU (30-4), falling 85-74 to end their season. Deshawn Corprew, in his final game in a Mustang uniform, had 12 points, joined in double figures by Sage Borbon with 11 and Tonje Durham, who also played his final game in a Mustang uniform, had 11 as well.
Baseball
• St. Louis, Mo., March 22 — Facing an opponent for the first time in program history, CBC took on the Eutectics of the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) in St. Louis at Stars Park on the Harris-Stowe campus. CBC (19-7, 4-1 AMC) took care of business, scoring a combined 21 runs in two wins, beating UHSP (7-14, 1-4 AMC) 8-4 and 14-3 in seven innings.
• St. Louis, Mo., March 23 — Looking to secure their first series sweep for the weekend, CBC was at Stars Park for the finale of their AMC matchup against the Eutectics of UHSP. CBC (20-7, 5-1 AMC) pounded out 11 runs on 11 hits to beat UHSP (7-15, 1-5 AMC) 11-2 and sweep the series!
