Retired BMA Pastor Dies
Larry Ronald Morgan, 88, of Fate, Texas, passed away Nov. 17. He was ordained as a deacon in 1962 and had a career as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service before surrendering to full-time ministry on May 16, 1971 at First Baptist Church in Springhill, La. He also served in the U.S. Army. He served the BMA of America as vice president (one term) in 1986 and president (two terms) from 1987 to 1988. He graduated from the BMA Seminary in May 1990 with an Associate of Divinity degree.
In July 1971, he was called to serve as associate pastor at Webb Chapel Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. The church called him to serve as pastor a year later, in 1972, and he served there until March 1999. Later that year, he began serving as interim pastor for his home church, First, Springhill, until they called him a full-time senior pastor in April 1999, a position he held until his retirement in December 2019.
In January 2020, Bro. Morgan moved to North Texas to be closer to family and began serving as the chaplain for Cheyenne Medical Lodge not long before the pandemic changed the world. He delivered one sermon in person and several more via Zoom before a hemorrhagic stroke impacted his ability to minister to groups.
Survivors include: his wife of over 66 years, Dianne; a daughter, Denise (Terry) Davis of Rockwall, Texas; a son, Dennis (Danette) Morgan of Dickson, Tenn.; two siblings, Gary (Becca) Morgan of Springhill, La. and Pam Morgan of Mena; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life was held on Friday, Nov. 22, with interment at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Rockwall under the direction of Rest Haven Funeral Home (resthavenfuneral.com).
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ronald Morgan Endowed Scholarship at Central Baptist College (1501 College Ave., Conway, Ark. 72034) to help others receive their education for ministry.
