SPORTS UPDATE: Men's Basketball Win Season Opener

Women’s Soccer

• Walnut Ridge, Oct. 24 — Looking to bounce back from their first American Midwest Conference (AMC) loss of the season, CBC was at Williams Baptist University (WBU) Soccer Field for a match with the Eagles of WBU. CBC (5-8-3, 3-1-2 AMC) scored four times in the first half and cruised to a 5-1 win over WBU (0-13-1, 0-6-1 AMC). Vitoria Loiola had a brace, while the Mustangs also received goals from Annesta Richards, Lexie Sengmanivong and Sierra Victory. Bayleigh Williams also had a pair of assists, and Bailey Walerczyk picked up her fifth win of the season in net.

• Morrilton, Oct. 28 — Playing for the final time at home this season, CBC hosted the Spartans of Missouri Baptist at Doyne Davis Stadium with a chance to finish second in the AMC. CBC (5-9-3, 3-2-2 AMC) allowed a pair of goals in both halves and fell to MBU (5-10-1, 4-2-1 AMC) 4-0. Bailey Walerczyk had seven saves on Senior Day for the Mustangs, who will be the #5 seed in next week’s AMC tournament.

Men’s Soccer

• Walnut Ridge, Oct. 24 — Heading to the road for the final time this season, CBC was at WBU Field for an AMC tilt against the WBU Eagles. CBC (5-8-4, 1-1-4 AMC) trailed after 60 minutes, but got a pair of late goals to draw with WBU (8-3-2, 4-0-2 AMC) 2-2. Hugh McAuley scored for the fourth time this season, while Marcos Pires added his third goal. Daniel Pinkney assisted on both goals, and Jasper Gadellaa was able to stop five Eagle attempts on net.

• Morrilton, Oct. 28 — Needing a win to secure a top-four seed in the AMC tournament, CBC hosted the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University (MBU) at Doyne Davis Stadium. CBC (5-8-5, 1-1-5 AMC) got behind early, tied the game and kept it tied, drawing with MBU (6-4-5, 3-2-2 AMC) 1-1. Daniel Pinkney scored his eighth goal of the season in the 31st minute to tie the match after MBU took the lead in the ninth minute. Jasper Gadellaa made three saves in goal, including two in the second half, to preserve a record fifth draw for CBC, breaking the previous record of four by the 2012 team.

Volleyball

• Nevada, Mo., Oct. 27 — Hitting the road for the second straight Friday, CBC was at Hinkhouse Gymnasium for an AMC match against the Comets of Cottey College (CC). CBC (12-11, 3-4 AMC) lost in straight sets to CC (11-15, 3-3 AMC). Madeline Freeman led the way in kills with seven while Mikayla Lawrence led in both assists with 11 and digs with 28 for her sixth career double-double and second this season. The 28 digs also put her 22 away from becoming the second player ever with 1,500 digs for her career.

• St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 30 — For the second time this season, CBC volleyball player Mikayla Lawrence has earned AMC defensive player of the week (DPOW). She also earned DPOW on Sept. 4. Lawrence, a senior libero from Beebe, had 28 digs and 11 assists Friday night at Cottey for the sixth double-double of her career. In the three-set match she averaged 9.33 digs per set and moved within 30 digs of 1,500 for her career.

Men’s Basketball

• Conway, Oct. 26 — Opening the 2023-24 at home, CBC hosted the Panthers of Philander Smith University (PSU) inside A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (1-0) never trailed, leading 42-34 at halftime time and hanging on to a 77-70 win over PSU (0-1). Wade Williams led the way in scoring with 17 points, and he was joined in double figures by Deshawn Corprew (who had 11), Kyle Harding (who put up 11 off the bench) and Sage Borbon (who scored all 10 of his points at the free throw line). CBC won the rebounding battle and outshot the Panthers from deep to secure a season-opening win for the second year in a row.

• Conway, Oct. 28 — Playing at home for the second time in three days, CBC hosted the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian University (BMCU) at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (2-0) trailed by one at the half, but outscored BMCU (0-1) 50-31 in the second half for an 86-68 win. Sage Borbon led six players in double figures scoring, while Deshawn Corprew again led the way in rebounding and Borbon again paced the team in assists. The Mustangs shot 57% from the floor for the game and 67% in the second half to breeze past the Toppers.
