STUDENT MINISTRY MATTERS: The Second Semester
We tend to put things on autopilot when we enter the second semester of student ministry each year. So much effort is put into the first semester with fall retreats, ball games and holiday adventures. We simply get tired. However, our work doesn’t end at the close of the calendar year and then pick back up in March. Our work continues from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. That being the case, how do we navigate the second semester of the school year?
• Take some time to rest in January. Our schedules are slower during the first month of the year — there’s no doubt about it. You might consider taking a short vacation with your family or perhaps just a few extra days off. Whatever your choice, take some time to recharge before you tackle the big tasks ahead.
• Evaluate your plans for the second semester. The second semester is filled with plans and activities for many of our student ministries — Spring Retreat, a Spring Break Mission Trip, Graduation Parties, etc. That doesn’t touch your teaching plan, small groups or other study-related activities. Take time to ensure they are all still the best choice for your group. Don’t fall into the trap of “We have always done things that way.”
• Work your plans. Planning is great, but it can’t end there. Plans must be implemented if they are of any value. Sometimes, it simply means you must put your head down and do the hard work of ministry. Don’t give up. Keep pressing on.
• Finalize your plans for the summer. The summer months can be some of the biggest for student ministry. Your students are typically more free during that time, so our activity increases — camps, conferences, mission trips and crazy gatherings are all a part of those months. Make sure you have your big plans and start working on the details. June will be here before you know it.
If you work with students, don’t get stuck in the second semester. The daily grind of ministry is difficult, but it can be where we see some of the greatest things happen. Keep working. Your students deserve it.
