Trusting The Process
By Taylor Shouse, Staff Writer • Ministers Resource Services
“Trusting the process” is a term we often hear. Any fan of athletics has likely heard continuous references to “the process” from Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban. You’ll often hear him say, “You can only control the process” or “Do your job and trust the process.” This mindset has helped him lead seven different teams to National Championship victories in college football.
Likewise, the Bible has multiple references that can be applicable to trusting the process in our own lives. For example, the book of Proverbs states, “Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit” (Prov. 27:18 ESV). Tending is a process that starts long before having the reward of the actual harvest. The farmer desiring the fruit begins with the end in mind, just as the team that eventually makes the championship game begins preparing to get there in training camp. The same principles apply to the spiritual, physical and financial facets of our everyday lives.
As believers, we aren’t guaranteed to always enjoy a steady upward trajectory. There are times we must deal with setbacks. Yet, the Word instructs us to trust in God’s process. The metaphorical fig tree in our lives may endure a drought or experience damage. Nonetheless, we must continue to tend to it, stay committed to the process and trust that the Creator will allow us to reap the appropriate reward.
