BMA FINANCIAL: Challenging Cultural Norms
By Steve Crawley, PhD, Executive Director • BMA Financial
In a recent article (faithfi.com/faithfi/counter-cultural-finances-7045), Rob West of Faith Fi explained that while we are in the world, we are not of the world, and how we manage our finances should reflect that fact.
As followers of Christ, we are called to live with a different set of values than the world, including how we handle our money. In I John 2:15 (ESV), we are reminded, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
This is a clear choice — we can either adopt the world’s mindset or follow God’s way. Worldly values focus on self-reliance, accumulation and pride. On the other hand, God’s Word calls us to generosity, humility and trust in Him as our ultimate provider.
The world says, “Get more, keep more and do it yourself.” But Scripture teaches us to give freely (Prov. 22:9), depend on God (Psa. 23:4) and seek His kingdom first (Matt. 6:33). It’s a radically different approach, but one that leads to eternal rewards.
Jesus modeled this countercultural way of living by serving others and challenging the norms of His time. As His followers, we are called to do the same — to replace greed with generosity and to love others in a way that reflects Christ. As stewards of God’s resources, our financial choices shape our hearts and serve as a testimony to others. Let’s handle our finances in a way that honors God and reflects His Kingdom.
