CBC SPORTS: Slapal Select AMC Golfer of the Week

Men’s Soccer

         • North Little Rock, Oct. 1 — Carrying a two-match winning streak into a mid-week contest, CBC was on the pitch at Burns Park for a contest against Ouachita Baptist (OBU). Taking on the Tigers (2-5-1) for the first time in seven years, CBC (4-6) allowed two first-half goals and couldn’t get through the OBU defense, falling 2-0. Hugh McAuley, Tim Echaniz and Alexander Bertilsson all had shots for the Mustangs as they took on a NCAA Division II opponent for the first time this season.

Men’s Golf

         • Henderson, Tenn., Oct. 1 — Playing in their penultimate fall tournament, CBC teed off in the first round of the Freed-Hardeman Fall Invitational at the Chickasaw Golf Club. CBC shot an opening round 293 and holds a three-shot lead after one round. Individually, Jakub Slapal is in second place after firing a three-under-par round of 69, two shots off the lead. Cooper Hermann and Kitsakon Jairak are both tied for sixth after shooting first-round 74s, while Suraprat Pareepart shot a 76 and Preston Nestorenko shot a 79. Jack Higginbotham posted an 80, and Gustavo Bello shot an 84, competing as individuals.

         • St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 7 — For the second time this season, CBC has had an athlete selected as the AMC golfer of the week. Jakub Slapal, who tied for third at the Freed-Hardeman Fall Invitational in Tennessee, where he opened with a 69 and closed with a 77 to finish with an overall score of 146, two strokes behind the winner, was the recipient of that recognition this week. He joins teammate Kitsakon Jairak, who earned recognition earlier this season.

         • Maumelle, Oct. 7 — Playing for the final time this fall season, CBC teed off at the Country Club of Arkansas for the first 36 of 54 holes at the CBC Fall Invitational. The Mustangs shot a two-round total of 615 to lead by five strokes heading into the next day’s final round. Individually, Kitsakon Jairak was in second place after shooting a 148, trailing the leader by five strokes. Jakub Slapal was fourth after shooting a 151, followed by Suraprat Pareepart, who shot a 157, Cooper Hermann, who shot a 160, and Preston Nestorenko, who shot a 163. Paul Gomez and Jack Higginbotham, competing as individuals, were tied for ninth after both shooting 156, and Gustavo Bello, who also competed as an individual, shot a 174.

Volleyball

         • Fulton, Mo., Oct. 3 — Playing on the road for their third consecutive match, CBC was at Anderson Arena for an American Midwest Conference (AMC) match against the Owls of William Woods University (WWU). CBC (2-6, 2-1 AMC) dropped the match to WWU (14-10, 2-2 AMC) in straight sets by scores of 11-25, 14-25 and 11-25. Madeline Freeman led the way with seven kills, while Brooke Schmitz had 12 assists and Kailee Walker made 15 digs. The Mustangs had 22 kills and hit .036, while the Owls had 45 kills and hit .460 with seven service aces compared to CBC’s two.

         • Nevada, Mo., Oct. 5 — With a day of rest between matches, CBC took on the Comets of Cottey College (CC) in an AMC match inside Hinkhouse Gymnasium. CBC (3-6, 3-1 AMC) dropped the first set 18-25 to CC (6-14, 0-4 AMC) before winning the final three sets 25-15, 25-20, 25-17. Madeline Freeman led the way with nine kills, while Brooke Schmitz led in assists with 14 and Kailee Walker led the way in digs with 19. Aubree Ruggles was also stout defensively, blocking seven attacks from Cottey to help hold the Comets to 34 kills and a hitting percentage of .013, while the Mustangs had 41 kills and a hitting percentage of .092. The key to the match was the serve, where CBC had 15 aces compared to 10 for Cottey.

Women’s Soccer

         • Conway, Oct. 5 — Playing at Centennial Soccer Park for the first time this season, CBC hosted the Stars of Stephens College (SC) in an AMC contest. CBC (0-5-1, 0-2 AMC) trailed 2-0 to SC (2-6-1, 1-1 AMC) at halftime before scoring their first goal of the season in the second half, ultimately losing 3-1. Jaycee Suarez was the first Mustang to score this season, putting a goal into the net in the 64th minute to make it 2-1 at the time. Stephens scored in the 25th, 34th and 86th minutes against an undermanned CBC squad, who played the full 90 with just 10 healthy players.

Women’s Golf

         • Maumelle, Oct. 7 — Playing in their penultimate tournament of the fall season, CBC teed off for the first round of the CBC Fall Invitational at the Country Club of Arkansas. Abby Kirby was in second place after one round, shooting an 81, three shots off the individual lead. Laney Crutchfield was in fifth after shooting a 90 and Thaylia Ramirez was in sixth place after shooting an opening round 91.
