CBC SPORTS: Men's Basketball Advance in NAIA Tourney
Men’s Basketball
• Langston, Okla., March 14 — Playing for the third straight season in the NAIA Opening Round presented by Ballogy, #15 CBC (#5 seed in the Naismith Bracket) took on the #12 seeded William Carey (WCU) Crusaders at C.F. Gayles Field House. CBC (27-5) shot over 52% from the field and came back from a second-half deficit to beat WCU (19-11) 97-82 and advance to the second round of the tournament for the second straight season. Sage Borbon finished with 29 points and was one of four Mustangs in double figures. Jonas Carlisle chipped in with 22, while both Savaughn Smith and Devin Foster had 10. The Mustangs outshot the Crusaders 52% to 48% from the field and won the battle on the glass 40-28 while outscoring the Crusaders in the paint 42-26.
• Langston, Okla., March 15 — Looking to take their second straight trip to Kansas City and the round of 16, CBC took on Langston (#22) at C.F. Gayles Field House in the Second Round of the NAIA Basketball Tournament presented by Ballogy. CBC (27-6) trailed by two at halftime, forced overtime, but ultimately saw their season come to an end to Langston (26-7) by a score of 81-76. Wade Williams led the way for CBC with 23 points while Jonas Carlisle added 12, Sage Borbon contributed with 11 and Brian Alexander had 10 off the bench. CBC won the turnover battle 7-11 but couldn’t keep Langston off the glass and got beat by 7 on second-chance points.
Baseball
• Hot Springs, March 11 — Playing a home game on the opponent’s home field, CBC hosted the Champion Christian (CC) Tigers at Majestic Park. CBC (12-11) scored four in the fourth and two in the sixth, using 10 pitchers to vanquish CC (5-11) 6-1.
• North Little Rock, March 14 — Opening up another American Midwest Conference (AMC) home series, CBC hosted the Pioneers of Crowley’s Ridge College (CRC) at Burns Park. CBC (13-12, 10-4 AMC) split the doubleheader with CRC (4-20, 4-10 AMC), dropping game one 6-4 before shutting out the Pioneers 7-0 in game two.
• North Little Rock, March 15 — Looking for another AMC series win, CBC hosted CRC in the final two games of the series at DeSalvo Memorial Stadium. CBC (15-12, 12-4 AMC) took care of business, beating CRC (4-22, 4-12 AMC) 6-2 and 6-0 to win three out of four games in the series.
Men’s Golf
• Columbia, Mo., March 11 — Seeking to make up ground after day one, CBC teed off in the final round of the Columbia Spring Invitational at Columbia Country Club. The Mustangs improved by 18 strokes, posting a final round of 306 to finish with a total of 630, placing them in 11th place. Individually, Cooper Hermann recorded a final round of 74, while Jakub Slapal shot a final round of 73, ending up tied at 151. Paul Gomez scored 80 for a total of 160, Jack Higginbotham registered a 74 to finish at 165, Gustavo Bello wrapped up with an 89 for a total of 168, and Preston Nestorenko finished with an 85, resulting in a total of 175.
Women’s Golf
• Columbia, Mo., March 11 — in the final round of their first tournament of the spring season, CBC was at the Columbia Country Club for the Columbia Spring Invitational. CBC shot a 378 in the second round to finish with a 757, good for eighth place. Individually, Abby Kirby tied for sixth, firing a final round 78 to finish with a 163, just four shots behind the winner. Laney Crutchfield closed with an 85 to finish with a 177, Thaylia Ramirez shot a 100 to finish at 192 and Danielle Alastre shot a 115 to finish at 215.
Softball
• Conway, March 11 — Playing their penultimate non-conference doubleheader of the season, CBC was at Warrior Field for a doubleheader against crosstown rivals Hendrix College (HC). CBC (11-15) swept the doubleheader, beating HC (4-8) 4-2 in game one and 15-5 in game two.
